How to Track Initiative in Pathfinder 2e

ArcForge Team·September 25, 2026·5 min read

Pathfinder 2e treats initiative as a skill check, not a fixed roll tied to one ability score - which gives GMs a useful lever for setting the tone of how a fight starts.

Perception is the default, not the only option

Most creatures roll initiative using a Perception check. But a character can roll initiative with a different, narratively appropriate skill instead, usually with GM agreement:

  • Stealth, if the party is setting up an ambush
  • Diplomacy or Intimidation, if a conversation is about to turn violent
  • Athletics, if the scene opens mid-chase

This is a GM tool as much as a player one: if a scene is building toward a specific kind of confrontation, prompting "what would you roll for initiative here?" can reinforce what's actually happening before the first Strike.

Handling ties

When initiative scores tie, PF2e suggests comparing the relevant modifier (often Perception) directly, with the higher one going first, and letting the GM break any remaining tie. As with any tabletop tie-breaker, the important part is picking a method and using it consistently, not relitigating it mid-encounter.

What changes once combat starts

Once rolled, initiative order holds for the entire encounter the same way it does in most d20 games - it's the three-action economy and reactions within each turn that make PF2e combat feel different, not the initiative step itself. See how to run Pathfinder 2e combat for that part.

Practical tracking tips

  • Write down which skill each combatant used for initiative, not just the number - it matters if a later effect interacts with that skill.
  • Announce the next combatant while the current one is acting, same as any system, to keep decisions moving.
  • For large fights, group identical low-threat enemies under one initiative count to cut down on bookkeeping.

ArcForge's Pathfinder 2e initiative tracker sorts combatants by whatever number you enter, so it works whether everyone rolled Perception or the table mixed in a few narrative exceptions.
