Initiative tracker FAQ

What is initiative in D&D?

Initiative determines turn order in combat. Each combatant rolls a d20 and adds their Dexterity modifier (and any other relevant bonuses); combat proceeds from highest total to lowest, looping each round until the fight ends.

How do initiative ties work?

By the 5e rules, the GM breaks ties, often by comparing Dexterity scores or letting the higher passive Perception act first. This tracker sorts by the initiative number you enter, so you can order tied combatants however your table prefers.

Can I use this without an account?

Yes. This tracker is completely free and does not require signing in. Your encounter is saved in your browser only, not on ArcForge's servers.

Does ArcForge save initiative inside a full campaign?

This free tool is a quick, local-only tracker for one-off use. ArcForge's full GM workspace connects initiative and combat to your actual campaign, scenes, and characters, and syncs across devices.
